When booking a trek up Mount Rinjani, you will find a massive range of prices. A huge chunk of that price difference comes down to one critical factor: the experience and compensation of your guiding team.
To help you make an informed decision for your safety and comfort, here is an honest breakdown of how the guide and porter system works on the mountain, and why choosing the right tier matters.
Not all crews on the mountain are equal. Generally, the industry is split into three different levels of service and expertise:
These are the elite trail masters of Rinjani. They hold official guiding licenses, boast years of rescue and navigation experience, and speak fluent English.
Who uses them: Reputable, top rated Travel Organizers who prioritize safety and premium service.
The Reality: Because these professionals are highly sought after, they are paid well above the standard market rates. This is reflected in the higher cost of premium trekking packages.
These crew members know the mountain trails like the back of their hand but lack formal institutional licensing or certifications.
Who uses them: Operators offering standard, mid range trekking packages.
The Pay Scale: They are typically paid standard base rates, which average around $25/day for guides (plus an extra $25 summit fee) and $20/day for porters.
These are typically younger locals who are just starting out and lack the deep experience needed to handle emergencies, severe weather, or complex guest relations.
Who uses them: Budget operators selling ultra cheap “budget open trips” or bargain basement sharing packages.
The Reality: To keep package prices incredibly low, these operators underpay their staff, offering rates well below the standard fair wage.
If you want to genuinely enjoy your climb and stay safe, avoid buying bargain bin packages.
When a tour is suspiciously cheap, the operator cuts corners on high quality food, proper camping gear, and fair wages for the staff. Underpaid or inexperienced crews are less equipped to handle emergencies, which can quickly turn your dream holiday into a hazardous situation.
We do things differently. We manage our own dedicated pool of guides and porters who are selected for their exceptional navigation skills, wilderness experience, and hospitality.
Our team is fully committed to delivering the best possible service on the trail. While we pay our team fair, competitive wages, they always go the extra mile with the hope of earning a well-deserved tip from happy guests and securing a great review for our company.
Choosing the right team can make or break your Rinjani experience. If you are still unsure which package fits your fitness level and expectations, we are here to help!
